BF15A Carburetor settings?

Can anyone suggest, the "factory" adjustments for the carburetor? I've tried tweaking the little spring loaded screw; it seemed to alter the idle speed. Then I tried a horizontal screw into the carburetor housing, tightening it clockwise until the stop, then opening it five full turns. The net result is it won't start at all.

Help! Where do I start?

The initial setting is 1 5/8 turns out. You may need to tweek it a little, but do so when the engine is warmed up and is in gear in the water. You should not have to adjust it more than an 1/8th turn or so.

Thanks, Mike. Are you talking about the idle adjusting screw with the spring, or the what I'm calling the needle valve screw? (Sorry, I'm a real hacker.)

I first started "messing" with it because the idle was way too high, even with the choke closed. I adjusted the idle successfully. But then the engine would begin stuttering and eventually stop when I turned it to full throttle. I replaced the fuel filter, and found no improvement. That's where the trouble began: I started messing with the horizontal needle valve screw and then it would no longer start.

Don't you just hate guys who should never handle a screwdriver?

The screw that I am referring to is called the idle mixture screw or pilot screw. It is the horizontal screw (single slot). This screw affects idle, acceleration, and to some but lessor extent higher speeds.
