BF150 Water Pump Replacement

I'm looking at the Helm manual in preparation of changing out my water pump on my BF150. It implies that the shift rod must be taken out once you drop the lower unit. I don't see how this has anything to do with the water pump. I know you have to be careful to have the gear in neutral, but otherwise it shouldn't be a factor?

Can anyone clear this up for me?

Thanks.

Keep the shift rod in place. The manual is set up as if you are going to continue to disassemble the rest of the lower part of the motor.

Just remember to keep everything in neutral and you will be fine.

If it is not hung up on the lower unit, due to corrosion etc, it should stay up in the motor. There is a clip on the end of the shaft that goes up into the upper shift assy.

If it falls out, just check its orientation...there is a flat spot inside the end of the shift shaft that corrisponds to the flat spot on the shift shaft sticking out of the gear case. These face forward if in neutral.

It should go right back up with just a little tapping on it.
