BF150 Dipstick, Grommet loose

Good morning all,

I'm sure this isn't a first, but can't find it through search. The grommet on the oil dipstick is loose, allowing the dipstick to go in too deep, or pull out through the grommet if not careful. My first thought is that a dab of 5200, applied and allowed to cure away fromt he engine, will fix this.

Thoughts?

Thanks you in advance,

I just buy a new dip stick since I can not be sure such a fix will work and most customers would not even notice if it failed....if they even check the oil.

Since you know what to look out for...it is worth a try.

I would clean the oil off of both parts first with some brake clean. Since the grommet is molded onto the dipstick, before applying any sort of adhesive, you should rough up the dip stick area that will be under the grommet with a file or abrasive to give the adhesive something to stick to.

5200, JB Weld, etc....I am not sure if any will hold.

In addition to the adhesive, you might be able to drill a small hole through the top edge of the grommet, through the dip stick and through the other side of the grommet. Then thread some safety wire, paperclip, or similar item through the drilled hole to give it a more secure attachment. You could even glue that is also.

Just a thought off the top of my head.

Maybe others have already succeeded in making this reattachment.

A new dip stick is only $16. You will probably spend more than $16 worth of your time fixing it....and it may or may not work. Or....maybe you just like to fix things.

Perfect, and thanks for the heads up. I had no idea anything on a boat costs only $16 :) Being that its about the same price as 5200, I think we'll proceed in that fashion. Can I assume that its available through this site? I'd like to support this place when possible.

Thank you,
