BF 90 Hard starting

Hello everyone. I own a 2006 Honda BF 90 and am having starting issues. When the engine is cold it can take up to 10 mins to get it going. After it's started it runs great all day and starts perfect first try. The fuel is new and I brought it into my local Honda dealer for a major tune up which cost me $750.00 and didn't fix the problem. The mechanic went through everything and told me that he found no major issues and the engine is in great shape. He checked that the operation of the choke was good and found nothing wrong with anything else. they did all the regular stuff like change oils, filters, valve adjustment, plugs etc. I always make sure to pump the fuel ball till it is full and hard.
Is there anything I'm missing?

Thanks
Joe

The 90's need to have a lot of throttle to start. If it starts ok when warm...it should start cold within a couple of seconds. If you are cranking for 10 minutes, it
can easily burn out the starter.

First...make sure that the choke is being activated. Take your hood off and watch the black plastic linkage between the carburators as someone activates the
choke. It should snap up and down and move all the carburator chokes when it does. It nothing moves, pull out the manual choke on the front of the engine
and see if anything moves then. If the linkage does not move, the choke is not working.
If the linkages move, then follow the next steps.

1. Squeeze fuel bulb until hard.

2. Put the shifter into throttle only mode or advance your fast idle lever (depending on your shifter)....advance the throttle to 1/3 to 1/2 throttle. Even more is
ok, but when it starts, you need to be ready to pull the throttle back fast, so it does not overrev.

3. Turn the key to on, and push the key in to activate the choke (you should hear it click),

4. Turn the key to start while holding in the key (still activating the choke).

The motor should start right away. If it coughs and sputters a little, push the key in quickly a couple of times to help it run better.

If you have a Honda side mount control box, you have to raise the fast idle lever all the way up (until it practically touches the shift handle) to activate the
choke.

Hope this helps.

Mike
