BF 5 Starter gear?

I have a very little used 95 BF 5hp that I am afraid to use!
Runs fine but the pull starter's plastic/nylon gear rides up and jams.
I have had it into the deal a couple of times and they can't seem to have any suggestions on how to improve it.
The newer models have a totally improved rig.
My question is whether anyone else has had this problem and whether they have figured out an improved starter rig??

1995 should be a BF5 not a BF50....I hope my assumption is right.

The nylon gear has been replaced by the new model that is used in the new 5hp.

Most likely, some of the mechanism is worn in places and is catching. It is also it is likely that the entire recoil starter is full of grease. In general, the only grease that should be there should be only in the recoil spring surface . The other parts should be clean and free of grease....like the starter gear, the spirling gear that raises it up, or the metal friction plate that retains the starter gear. If those have grease, they get dirty and they will get stuck.

Also, no grease on the flywheel teeth. Should be clean and dry.

Know of a motor hat had the same problem.------Went to the dealer and he went to the stock room to find the part without looking it up.-This means it is a common problem.
 
Help! I'm having the same problem. Brand new recoil starter, and the plastic gear is very loose fit on helical splines of the plastic reel. The gear bounces around when the engine vibrates, and hits the teeth on the flywheel. The result is that there's an obnoxious clatter, and the plastic gear teeth are getting chipped and will soon get broken off.

Recoil starter part number is 28400-ZV1-083ZB, motor is '02 BF5A2L Ser. BADS-1700100. No grease on the splines, either. Looks like the starter part number is still valid for the most recent BF5A model.

One thing I did notice is that if the metal tabs of the spring retainer aren't correctly engaged into the drag spring on the plastic reel, the gear will rise sideways and can jam into the flywheel, which may have prompted the original post.

Appreciate any help you can provide, even if only to confirm that the replacement recoil starters are defective and that Honda is not going to help.
