BF 45 Alarm issue

Hello, all...I have a early 2000's BF45 that alarms at advanced throttle settings, both lights off.
Pee tube has great volume, and no signs of heating other than the alarm. We had to limp home at 1000 rpm last week, so I checked the impeller...it's looks new....this is a new to me OB, so I really don't know the history. I pulled the wire from the temp switch, and no difference. I did find a disconnected wire in the connector stack, so I re-connected, and stuck the boat in the water, and ran at 3000 in gear for a few minutes, no alarm.
Came home, went to flush, and the alarm again came on when I advanced the fast idle lever. Starting to go a little crazy here....is there only 1 temp switch in this motor??

Thanks,
Mark

First of all, the BF45 was introduced in the USA in 1990 and was produced until the BF50 was introduced in 1995.

One thing I noticed you write....."no lights on ". When the engine is running and there is good oil pressure, the green light should be on. If there is an oil pressure issue, the light will go out.

Check your oil. Make sure it is clean and about 1/4" below the full mark.

Make sure you use the proper Honda oil filter.

Find the oil pressure switch on the upper rear port side of the engine. It has a yellow wire going to it. Remove the wire and start the engine....

If the light comes on....remove the switch and clean the very small hole in its end of any debris or oil buildup. Also, make sure the hole in the side of the engine is not plugged with goo.

Reattached the wire to the oil pressure switch and start your engine again. Hopefully, the green light comes on. If not, then it is time to check your oil pressure.

You check it at the hole where the oil pressure switch is installed. At 950 rpm or so, the pressure should be 21.3 psi or greater.

The basics of the oil pressure switch..... When the engine is not running or there is insufficient oil pressure, the oil pressure switch sends a ground over the yellow wire to the warning light module. At that time, the light is out. When there is sufficient oil pressure, the ground is removed and the green light should go on. That is why I suggested you test the system to be sure the light is working properly.

If you get to the point of having the check the oil pressure and do not have a gauge...and you are in the USA....Harbor Freight sells a very inexpensive gauge set, that should have the proper fitting. http://www.harborfreight.com/engine-oil-pressure-test-kit-98949.html

One other thing....since this motor is new to you, you may not know, that when you run it on a hose, there is a third water pickup, just above the prop, that needs to be sealed off with a duct tape or similar tape.

Oh! Another thing. If you would like an owner's manual, you can download one for free from Honda....based on your frame serial number http://marine.honda.com/support/manuals/models/BF45

Thanks, Mike, for the detailed reply...turns out there was a connector unplugged, and I could not see the indicator light(s)....we were low on oil! I thought it was a temp warning.... We went ahead and did an oil change.
My best guess on the motor vintage as the ID plate is long gone...the manuals are for BLAF/BSAF/ or BANU prefix motors....not sure which one applies.....this is a remote control unit on a 17' Triumph Center console.

Thanks again!
