I have a 2012 Honda BF40 hp engine. Is it true that the ECM can be reflashed or replaced to a Bf50's ECM's spec's to become a 50 hp?

It appears the 40hp has a full throttle range of 5000 to 6000 rpm's. The 50 hp has a full throttle range of 5500 to 6000 rpm's. The hp rating of the 40 is taken at 5500 rpm. The hp rating of the 50 is taken at 6000 rpm's. Everything else seems identical on the engines. I'm wondering if the ECM is working like a rev limiter set at 5500 rpm on the 40 hp.

Major differences are throttle cam, throttle body and ECU. I do not know of a way to reflash a 40 hp ECU to make it a 50 hp ECU.

You may want to compare parts lists to be sure.

What is your WOT rpm? IMO size the prop to achieve around 6000 rpm and run with it.

I'm in the process of moving the batteries to the front of the deck to help balance the load. It sits low in the rear right now. In the spring I'll have to run it with the weight moved and start from there.

In general our outboard engines are engineered for high performance. You may gains few ponies by installing larger high speed jets but how it will effect everything blown stream could be another issue. Size the prop for the best performance and if you want to go faster get a engine with more hp. Definitely how you distribute weight, is the hill clean and the double bottom dry are factors on engineperformance.

my rpm's with two people in the pontoon was about 5400 tops. From what I see could re-prop it to get close to 6000 rpm. My current prop has some strike issues so now is a good time to switch. Do you know if there is a rev limiter set to below 6000 rpm's or should I be able to obtain 6000 ?

Rule of thumb is 200 rpm per inch of pitch. Your basically pushing a barge if you can drop the pitch 2-3 inches and a cupped prop wouldnt hurt.
