BF 225 2 cylinders not firing

hooked on

New member
I have a 295 BW with 2 BF225s. The port engine just started acting up. The lower two port cylinders did not fire. Tested by pulling the connector to the coils. I let it run for a few minutes and it blew the 15 amp fuse. The port center coil was shorted to ground and swollen - hard to remove. Honda said it may be more than the coil. They said to replace the coil and let it run at idle and feel the tempurature by holding hands on the end of the coil, If that position got hotter than the ohter coils the the ECM was Bad. I replaced the ECM and the bad coil and the same two cylinders won't fire. The plugs are like new. I suspect the injectors. But the way all this happened I wonder if there could be another reason. I assume the ECM also controld the injectors. Any help is greatly appreciated. So far the Honda mechanic is puzzeled.

I assume the 15a fuse that blew is the fuse for the coils? The other 15a fuse powers the ECU and the injectors. You are right the ECU controls both the injectors and the firing of the coils.

I would first switch the two spark plugs with two others...to remove all doubt on the plugs.
I also assume that the mechanic did a compression or leakdown test to check the cylinders.

Did the mechanic check the injectors and the coils for the proper voltages?

Did he also check the pulses coming from the ECU at the injectors and the coils?
They should be the same for all of the injectors and the same for all of the coils.

Have to first eliminate the obvious.

In spite of all I said, there may be some other common item causing the problem. If the tech is working with Honda, they should continue to work with him until the problem is found...even to the point of the District Service Manager checking it out in person. Unfortunately, the DSM has a lot of territory to cover in the Florida area, so it could be a while before he could get to it.
