BF 130 lower unit remoavl issues

step two

New member
I have removed lower unit and replaced water pump numerous times, until yesterday, (1999 original owner, salt water use, lobster boat, 2000+ hours use) removed 5 nuts, tapped lower down, very reluctant to move, noticed aluminum oxide particles, (corrosion particles) falling out, tapped lower unit, down below studs, 5 inches or so, and hung up.... I can move unit back up and then slide down by but snags on drive shaft (shift shaft completely disengaged and fine, water pump outlet pipe well clear, DO I NEED TO LIFT POWER HEAD TO FIND THE CAUSE OF HANG UP? Any ideas??

Unfortunately, you will have to drop that extension housing. If it has never been removed, it may be very difficult to separate it due to the salt water and corrosion.

Good luck.

Extension housing was reluctant to move but managed with liberal spray of Free-All, Bushing is indeed bad, lower does slide up and down (with extension housing) but drive shaft still hanging up above it! Do I need to lift power head to access it?

Can you look up inside with a small mirror to see what is holding it?

I can not remember what else the drive shaft goes through. There may be an opening that is caked up with salt and narrowing the passage.

I do not think that the shaft is in the power head any more.

You will not be able to lift the powerhead without removing the midsection and the oil pan. The mounting bolts are under those two items.

It is possible that there may be something in the midsection that is holding it. You may have to remove the midsection also.

To do so, you have to remove the plastic side panels around the midsection.....remove the lower motor mounts....then remove the bolts holding the midsection on.
