Bent shift linkage????

Good day guys, I just received a 30 hp Mariner, 2 cylinder one carb, serial number 30 ML 689 L 331200.

While looking at the motor, I noticed the shift linkage is bent on the lower portion under the nuts (i.e. were it goes into the lower leg). In turn, it feels like it wont go into reverse.

My question is, is this normal for this type of motor? If not, is it fixable? Worth fixing? Or am I just going to end up having to replace it?

Upfront thanks for any help.

Both the upper and lower portions of the shift shaft have bends. See http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/655.cfm for parts diagrams for the 30A.
