Bent prop shaft

I just got a 1978 115 hp mercu

I just got a 1978 115 hp mercury. When I spin the prop by hand it spins in an egg shape instead of a smooth circle. Is my prop shaft bent or bad bearings? Help! I am new to boat motors!

If you don't hear any growling from the bearings as you spin the shaft...its a bent shaft. Someone hit something hard...more than likely with a stainless prop.

(1) the prop bush is off center
(2) the prop shaft is bent

Take the prop off and rotate the shaft and see if the shaft is wobbeling.
 
Use a piece of wire as your in

Use a piece of wire as your indicator. Clamp it to the cav plate with Vise Grips and aim the end of the wire at the center of the prop shaft.
