"Hey all:
After I bought my boat I noticed the fin on the bottom of the gear case had had major reconstructive surgery. on closer inspection I find it is not quite straight. Additionally, once in awhile if I hit a wave just right, the RPMs go up but my speed decreases. when I stop and go again everything is just fine. Is this cavitation due to my bent fin? Should I try to have this straighted or replace the housing? ASAP or can I get by?

thanks

It is unlikely a not quite str

It is unlikely a not quite straight skeg will cause cavitation try looking up "skeg guard " on the net .a re welded skeg is usually fine as long as the housing is not distorted ie leaking water into the gear box .

"No water inside the gear box

"No water inside the gear box and good to know about the skeg. Seems I'm far from alone with that issue. However, what then about the cavitation? It feels like the prop has fallen off. I've thought seaweed, or currents. Could my trim/tilt be off in 3ft wind waves? should it be up more in rougher water?

Could be trimmed a bit too hig

Could be trimmed a bit too high (or mounted too high) and is breaking the surface when you bob with the waves/wake...
