BELLHOUSING LIP SEAL QUESTION

"I just received a set of bell

"I just received a set of bellhousing bearings and seals for a AQ271C/DP-A and after installing the bearings and snap rings, I tried to install the drive side seal and it was too small. The flywheel side seal was ok... According to the drawing, the seals on both sides are the same seal. Any ideas what's up here? Did I order the wrong seal ? Is this a common problem ? "Bobzilla, did you end buying

"Bobzilla, did you end buying a bellhousing witht he number #835978 in the casting? If so, both seals are supposed to be the same size. If the ones you received are also the same size, one thing that may have happened is that you have to press the seal on the drive side a bit further in. The distance between the top of the seal and the end of the driveshaft should be 37 mm (just shy of 1.5"). Another thing that could have happened is if the bellhousing was damaged in the past it may have been machined to accept a larger lip seal."

"Yes, I bought the correct bel

"Yes, I bought the correct bellhousing (used) and the unit looked fairly new with very little wear and tear. The drive side of the shaft has two large lock rings (#83 in the drawing). One sits on the bearing and the other sits closer to the end of the shaft, therefore, it doesn't allow the lip seal to travel down the "throat" any further. This lock ring looks as if it is there to provide a seat for the lip seal. I may be looking at getting a larger lip seal. Thanks for the assist.

"Btw, do you think I could sim

"Btw, do you think I could simply remove the lock ring and send the lip seal further down the shaft, closer to the bearing and then put the lock ring back in place? I mean, what is the purpose of that lock ring other than to provide a seat for the lip seal. ????"

"Bobzilla, the bellhousing for

"Bobzilla, the bellhousing for the 271c/DP-A is number 841967, and I understand the one you bough has a different number, 835978, and looks physically different (see link):

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/volvo_omc/index.cfm?fuseaction=comp&grou p=2324&GroupList=2316,2317,2318,2319,2320,2321,2322,2324,2323,2325,2326,2327,232 8,2329,2330,2331,2332,2334,2335,2336,2337,2338,2339,2340,2341,2342,2343,2344,234 5,2346,2347,2348,2349,2350,2351,2352,2353,2354,2355,2356

The ball bearings and the lip seals seem to be the same sizes on both bellhousings, but not the shaft. Perhaps the only difference between shafts is that one has the coarse spline and the one you have has the fine spline, but I am not sure about that.

I think that you should verify that the lip seak is of the correct size; that is, same size as the one you installed on the flywheel side of the bellhousing. If the snap ring is correctly installed in its groove in the bellhousing, the lip seal should be in position and tight once you install it. I suggest you first get a vernier caliper and verify the 37 mm distance I gave you in the previous post. If OK, then my guess is that either the lip seal is of the wrong size, or the bellhousing has been machined to accept a larger seal than the one you got."

"Thanks again, however, the pa

"Thanks again, however, the part numbers are the same for both bellhousing lip seals. The lip seals I received are the same size and part numbers. I have a feeling I'm going to have to caliper the opening and get the correct size for that opening.
