Belgium???

I just noticed while working on a 1991 6 hp Johnson (J6REI) that the word BELGIUM appears (in all caps) directly under the model i.d. sticker.
I know where Belgium is and I know that it's a long way from Illinois where I assume (maybe incorrectly) this engine was originally manufactured.
What exactly does this "BELGIUM" reference on the motor indicate?

Factory of production just go by the model number when looking up parts!

My '84 6 hp Yachtwin was made in Belgium.

Starting sometime in 1960-1970 ish (don't remember exactly when), OMC started building all U.S. small motors in Belgium. "Small" as in 3-4hp. Probably expanded since then.

My johnson 70 vro from 1989 was tagged with a B as in BJ70TLCEM.
B= Belgium
