Beeping Alarm, BF130, 2002

After running great all afternoon (no overheat, waterpump was working), I trailered the boat home and was ready to flush the motor. Turned the key and all three lights (check engine, overheat and green light) all came on and had an intermittent beeping (approx 1 second apart) engine would not even attempt to start. Manually held up the ignition kill switch, put a charged battery in, checked oil, all to no avail. The only sound the engine makes is electric motor actuation for a few seconds (like the starter is beginning to engage but is being overridden by the computer?) In my optimistic hopes that a new day will bring better luck, but alas the same results happened the following day after the engine cooled down. Any recommendations for some troubleshooting would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem. The hydraulic lift would not work; the motor would not start on my GB 2670 2000. The problem a coroded ground cable joining both engines. The original cable was not marine grade and had COPPER lugs, unplated!!!

Replaced, and no problems.

After a little more investigation the situation becomes murkier...the noise that I hear from the engine with the key on is what I believe to be the fuel pump. After 2 seconds it turns off. As mentioned before, all trim/tilt, accessories and guages work but the starter won't even engage. All of the fuses (10A, 30A and90A) are good. The key switch and kill switch are not visibly loose or in bad shape. Any recommendations are welcome - Relay or solenoid testing are next.

Everything you are describing indicates, things are working as expected except for the cranking (at least for now).

Check your positive and ground connections at the motor as chawkman suggested before.

Listen for a click of the starter solinoid. If you hear none...

Make sure that the shift lever is in neutral. Also, check to be sure the neutral safety switch (located in the front lower part of the engine...right next to the fuel filter). The solinoid gets its ground through the neutral safety switch.

The 30 amp fuse provides 12v to the starter. Check to see if you get 12v at the post on the starter solinoid. You should not need the key on the measure it there.

There is a blackwhite lead that goes from the starter solinoid through a connector to the keyswitch at the dash. \

When 12v is applied to this lead from the keyswitch, it activates the starter solinoid (it should click), then the solinoid shoots a higher current 12v to the starter.

The only other thing of than wiring harness connectors that would be in the circuit would be a neutral safety switch in your shift box itself...but most Honda shift boxes do not have them...so you should not have to worry about it unless it is an aftermarket shifter.

Hope that did not confuse you too much. It has to be something out of position or a bad connection.

Mike

Rereading the posts...I just want to make sure the when you turn the key switch to on, you get a couple beeps, all the lights come on, you hear the fuel pump for two seconds, then the beeping stops and all the lights go out except for the charge light.

Is that what is happening? Or...does the beeping continue? Do any other lights stay on?

Just want to be sure I am understanding correctly.

Mike

Check your wiring harness where it meets the motor cowling. Have someone turn the key while you wiggle the wiring harness.

My thanks to Mike and all who provided recommendations. After fooling with the what I think was the nuetral safety switch and working the shifter a number of times, voila! it starts. I started it multiple times to test it out, and it worked fine. I am a little concerned as to why it happened in the first place, and more concerned as to what I actually "fixed", but am thankfull that it is up an running. THanks again to all. Rich
