Yeah I did it, put a cheap, not sealed battery in my boat with a 96 225 with a new rectifier. Duh? even after i read here not too... charged normal first couple times out, then today towards end of run volts pegged at 17 over 3000rpm. below that normal 13.8. went straight in.... I'm getting a new interstate marine 24M XHD starting batt. IS THAT A COMPATIBLE BATTERY? and other Question is did I fry my rectifier? or is it a try it and see? tach was working normal. THANKS ALL....

Do a proper diagnostic using a DVA adaptor. It could be all three the stator, rectifier and battery. A bad stator can also cook the powerpack so make sure it tests good with a DVA. If everything checks out and your still getting high volts just ad a high amp draw appliance to use up the extra power being produced. A good refrigerated ice chest will serve several purposes.
