"Last season when I went to winterize my 1996 40hp force (by mercury marine/tracker) I tried starting the engine with a fairly dead battery. After a few weak attempts I turned the key to the off position but the engine kept trying to crank over. After a few minutes I realized the battery was smoking/arching. I managed to disconnect it and trolled back onto my trailer.
Now when I go to connect a new battery it archs like crazy when I touch the negative post, I replaced my ignition switch thinking that was the culprit causing a dead short but it's not...any suggestions?"
