I have a 1977 70 h.p. and was wondering if a 100 amp riding mower/tracker battery is going to be big enough to start the motor . seems to me that a full sized battery is overkill for as small as the starter is .

your engine manufacturer gives a specific cold cranking amp figure for your battery for a good reason,Your boat has probably more accessories that will need a bigger battery!! Not a good idea.

It may start the motor but your big concern is the charging system. Get a standard flooded cell car battery do not use a maintenace free type battery as you chance cooking the stator and ignition system.
