Bang and judder

hi all I was out in my rib at

hi all I was out in my rib at the weekend when my outboard banged and judder it would run ok for a few minutes and do it again what do I check first its a 1990 70 hp vro thanks Andy

hi jwbmarine iv done a compression ck and that's fine i changed the oil on the lower unit about 7 weeks a go but now its cloudy and there's iron filings on the magnet the bang and judder only happens in forwerd gear andy

"a small amount of filings is normal..,but since u need to re-seal anyway,...u need to tear down lower unit,and inspect..
if the eng was running ok,just banging,in gear..it is prob forward gear and clutch dog time"

Thanks jwbmarine iv started to take the lower unit to bits iv just found that the prop turns almost a 1/4 turn when its in gear is this another sign that the clutch dog is us Andy
