I need to know how to adjust t

I need to know how to adjust the air /fuel setting on 87 merc 70hp with 3 carbs.The motor will start and idle rough befoe dying but if I choke it the motor will pick up and run pretty smooth for a minute and slow down and cough and die.Is turning the mixture screw in making it lean or rich. Thanks for any help

"I could not get the link in JB's post to work an error mess,said I couldn't access that section.The blk/white wire from trigger has most of the insulation off it and the wire looks dullish, looks like it got too hot.The wire looks better about 3 inches from trigger can this be spliced or shoud trigger be replaced? Thanks for your help"
