badge engineering

is there any mechanical difference between a mercury 50 hp 4 stroke 4 cyl (carb version) and the mariner and yamaha versions? or are they simply badge engineered?

also what is the reliability of the mitsubishi (twin) coil packs fitted to the mariner version? (I have had one go awol on me) - they are however reasonably priced

thanks

andy

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc2/Mercury/50 (4-STROKE)/0G760300 THRU 0T178499/parts.html There is no difference between the Mercury and Mariner 50's,4 stroke. http://www.boats.net/parts/search/M...60300 THRU 0T178499/Cylinder Block/parts.html
But the Yamaha is a different beast altogether .http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Yamaha/Outboard/1999/50EJRX/CYLINDER CRANKCASE/parts.html .
The older Mariner's,made in Japan,2stroke, 2 cylinder, up until about '94 were the even older Yamaha 2stroke,2cylinder outboards painted in the Mariner colours. And the Yamaha and Mariner parts for those models could be interchanged.
This didn't follow through to the late '90's 4 stroke.
I haventaclue about the coils as I haven't had a coil go on me:D:D
