Bad tach

" i'm working on a 1982 merc 70 3 cyl. if i connect the tach to the black wire with yellow stripe it kills the spark. not all the time, but most of the time. the tach seems to work when it allows the engine to run. do i have a faulty tach or am i missing something here? "

" The tach should be attached to a gray wire for the signal, a black wire for the ground and a purple wire for power. The blk/yel wire is for the stop circuit. "

Most cases I have encountered with tach is that either they work or they don't.

the grey wire isn't conne

the grey wire isn't connected to anything on the engine side of the wiring harness where should it go?

" my tach on my 1990 johnson 70 was working intermittenly now it quit altogether. Should I look for a loose wire or replace the unit??

Also, my motor is oil injected but the previos owner removed the oil injector in favor of mixed fuel. now the low oil warning whistle is sounding, first just at idle, now all the time.
engine runs great. should I disable the alarm?? How "
