Bad exhaust bellows

"I bought my first boat a few

"I bought my first boat a few months ago, a 1992 Bayliner Avanti 3055 with dual GM 305's.
Everything works great except that the port engine leaks water when the engine is running.
The boat is moored at the marina so it is in the water 24/7. Last week I vacuumed all the
water out of the bilge and let it sit. When I checked it a week later the bilge was still dry. I
started the left engine and water started trickling into the bilge again. I checked all of
the hoses including the 'Y' pipe connections and everything is bone dry. The leak seems to
be coming from the rear of the engine near the transom but space is tight and I can't see back there.
Could this be caused by a faulty exhaust bellows? Thanks in advance.

"Since it is in the water 24/7

"Since it is in the water 24/7, if any of the bellows had a leak the boat would take on water 24/7. The leak is probably above the waterline on the engine or a related cooling water part. Roto Rooter has a small camera to look inside pipes. Pay them or someone w/a camera to look in back when it's running. Or get some mirrors and a bright light to find it.

A remote wireless backup camera would work. I have one on my truck. It's small enough to use in the back of the boat."

The rubber boots that are in the exhaust (after the elbows) are probably loose. Get a 5/16 " nut driver and tighten them . there should be 4 hose clamps per boot.

I'm going to thoroughly go

I'm going to thoroughly go over the engine this Saturday including tightening all of the hose clamps. Thanks for all the help. When I find out what it is I'll post what I found.

"Well, I tightened up ALL of the hose clamps and No Joy. It still leaks. I rechecked all of the water lines and the exhaust hoses and all are bone dry. I tried using a mirror to see behind the engine but that didn't work like had hoped. I'm leaning toward an exhaust bellows leak again, possibly a loose clamp or minor crack that only leaks when its under pressure. Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks in advance."

"OK, here is the plan. I'm

"OK, here is the plan. I'm going to disconnect the exhaust boot at the y-pipe right where the flapper sits and inject food coloring in the water. I'm going to use RED for the right side and BLUE for the left. Secure all of the boots and retighten the clamps and start the engine. If the leak changes color, I know its in the exhaust system. If there is no color change, I'll know the leak is in the water delivery system. I'll keep everyone posted."

"UPDATE - I disconneted the right and left hoses connected to the exhaust risers at the thermostat housing. Poured red dye in the right hose and blue dye in the left. Started the engines and the water from the leak remained clear, no color change, even after 10 minutes. This was a huge relief since I know that the Y pipe connection to the transom is not the culprit and that the exhaust sytem is tight. That leaves me with the water delivery system which consists of 2 hoses, both go to the circulating pump located beneath the power steering pump. Next step is to find a place above the water line to disconnect the skupper hose and pour dye in it and see what happens. If the water still remains clear, it leaves the sterndrive hose as the culprit."
