backwards shift rod connector (77 evinrude 25 25702s)

I just purchased a really clean and running 77 evinrude 25. First time taking the lower unit off and I found the access to the shift rod connector via the exhaust housing. When I popped the access open I found that the machine screws are in the shift rod connector backwards. How is that possible , so basically i am staring at the ends of the screws not the heads. Any suggestions? Greatly appreciate it.

Well somebody used special assembly technique here, or it was like that from day one at the factory.----------------See if you can force it to turn around.------------If not , then you will have to cut it with a saw of some type and install a new connecter.------------Or drill out the upper screw ( carefully )and install a new connecter.

Yea I was thinking that might have to be done, going to be a pain either way, thanks alot for the help.
