"After a long day on the river i was cruising back to the marina. When increasing the throttles through 2000rpm, one of the engines kept back-firing? Any ideas? Earlier in the day the right engine quit. May have been an electrical issue, posible unrelated? But my big concern is the back-firing."

"I wish I could give more info, I ran the boat all day friday, and saturday no major issues. Full throttle runs of over 45mph. It only back-fired twice on the last run back to the marina. After that i just idle'd it back in. My boat's a 27ft. regal ventura twin 5.7's, that are way back inside the engine compartment. Its a very quit running boat thats why i was surprised when it back-fired. I'm going out again today, more info to come."

Time will tell. Perhaps it is just the smog from the forest firers in Java."

"i have a 1998 225 mercury optimax thats would not stay start at idle it has to be troddle up to start and then it smokes and spit and if idle down in neutral cuts out,will run once in gear but will not reach top end speed,also there is a intermitten beep,not continous. i check spark plugs, cylinder #2 & #4 sames to be always fouled like burning too rich,could this problem be tps, reeds or low compression,(will check compression asp)"

"Ok gentleman, I'm back with a new question. No back fires since i started this thread. So I'm hoping if i post this new problem it will magically fix it self. I'm having issues with starting these carbed small blocks. They always start but after three or four starts in a single day the batteries seem very week. I have two new batteries and isolation switches so the draw from the stereo only pulls down one battery. I always start with both batteries on, then after I shut down I turn the isolator switch to 1 or 2. It's not a huge issue, just curious what you guys think? Alternator gone bad? Bad wiring? overly cautious owner who spends to much time on his boat????"

"You have twin engines so I think it is unlikely that both alternators will be be bad at the same time. The batteries are also new, so there is probably no problem with them.

Some possibilities:

1) If you start the engines often and run them for short periods at the time, the alternators will not have time to recharge the batteries.

2) The batteries wiring is in poor condition, or the connections between batteries and starters or engine blocks and batteries are corroded and have poor conductivity.

Unless you have installed a stereo with a 400 megawatt amplifier and you are setting the volume at maximum level
