Backfire through carb.

I put my boat in the water April 23 and ran up and down the bay. The boat ran great, just like it has for the past 9 years I've had it. 1986 3100 tiara with 454's. 1300 hours. New wires a year or 2 ago, new Edelbrock carbs. One 2 or 3 years ago, the other last year. Last Tues I had it out and starboard engine ran great up to 2000 rpm. Anything above it would backfire through carb. I stopped and found the distributor cap contacts corroded. Not the worst I've seen but not good. I scraped them clean as best I could with a screwdriver and it backfired once and was fine the rest of the day. Yesterday I replaced cap and rotor but it was crappy weather so I couldn't test it. Could corroded cap cause that? I hope to take it out tomorrow for a test.
