"Hello, I'm new to a 3585 Cruisers Flybridge. It has 2x454 mercruiser 7.4 with about 400hrs on them. My starboard engine would have problems cranking but then it went to sometimes and it seems to have gotten worse. I can hear the starter kick out, but it does not spin engine. Port engine cranks over no problem. Batts are strong, changed the starter same symptoms. I attempt to move shift levers hearing the change in the egnition, but still no crank. I turned the engine by hand, so I don't think it's frozen. Would the NSS make the starter pop out and not crank or would it stop it from even clicking? makes no difference from what helm I try from. it was fine and in 4 weeks went from intermitant to nothing except the load clumk of starter engaging. Any ideas for troubleshooting would be appeciated."

That's where I'd start......."

"Defenitely cleaned the wirring at the starter, but have not metered. What are the numbers I should see at the starter when cranking? Is my hair piece going to fry as I test while cranking?
Thanks for all your help."

"Gabe;
Check your voltmeter for the stbd engine while cranking. It should drop to 8 or 9 volts but not lower. If it drops lower, you have a shot starting battery, or bad wiring/solenoid, like Bondo said.

Try jumping that battery with a known good battery and see what happens.
If that does not work, it has to be wiring or starter/solenoid.

The NSS switch only affects the low current trigger voltage to the slave solenoid. It sounds like that is working fine. It's the high amperage supply that is a problem somewhere.

You won't cook your hairpiece with 12 volts, but you sure could if you fool around with the plug wires.

"Great info, I'll run those few test/tips after it stops raining. Yes it's Raining in San Diego! I'll update my findings......
Thanks for the fast and friendly replies."

Gabe;
Don't forget the heavy black ground wire from the ground stud on the back of the engine bellhousing to the battery. This must also be in good clean condition.

Good luck

Gabe; Also make sure the starter mounting bolts are tight, so as to complete the circuit path back to the engine block.

"Awesome info, I will get to this boat thing on Friday. I have this work thing getting in the way of my boating thing. Thanks for all your advice, I'll update with results this weekend.

"Thank you ALL for your quick

"Thank you ALL for your quick and educated troubleshooting responses. I’m a lazy hacker that jumps to too many conclusions, I should be considered parts monkey when it comes to troubleshooting and fixing. After buying a reverse starter ($250) and being down for 10 days, I found that my Batt was not kicking out enough Amps to turn the engine. A quick cable jump from one of the other 2 Batts I have on the vessel, proved a solution to a simple problem. (Bad Battery).
On positive note, I learned about the engines/etc electrical backbone and all my connections are now properly cleaned.

Rule #1-
If your engine does not crank, test your batteries for adequate Volts/Amps.

Thanks again for all your assistance, you are all making me feel welcome to this new boating concept.

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to ALL.

Till our next puzzle…….

"GAbe;
Glad it worked out.
Sometimes the problem is so obvious we don't see it until we have replaced lots of other stuff. We have all been there, trust me on that one.

Happy Holiday Season!"
