b96 130 Johnson still dies or bogs down when opened up

" I rebuilt and cleaned my car

" I rebuilt and cleaned my carbs this weekend. On my test drive I could tell that my engine now seems to idle smoother and I think starts easier. It was dieing when opened up. Now it doesn't die as easily but it sounds like it's bogging and gurgling for a couple seconds then it takes off harder than ever before. It also reached 5,500 rpm's for the first time since I had it. I figured floats so I lowered them just a tad. Nothing scientific about my setting them just a little lower and uniform for all four. I wasn't able to take it back out but it still seems to be bogging and now dies on flushette after idling for about 30 seconds. I noticed that my fuel filter appears to get empty in this time frame and I have to pump up the bulb. If I pump it when it starts to die it keeps running. Is this a bad fuel/oil pump? I checked all my lines and hoses and they look new. Does my onboard tank use a sock at the pickup? It's a 20' SeaArk and I don't have a manual yet. Any thoughts are always welcome. (Hi again Joe?)
Thanks,

"Mike... If the timer base under the flywheel isn't sticking, I'd strongly suspect that you have a "Anti Siphon" valve located where your rubber fuel hose connects to your built in fuel tank. They have a habit of sticking and causing a fuel restriction. It would be aluminum, and about 2" long. Remove it. If it has a spring, ball, and ball seat within it, knock those items out which converts it to a straight through fitting, then reinstall it. Let us know what happens.

The floats.... I've found from experience through the years that the best possible float setting is obtained by holding the carburetor body upside down, then adjusting the float so that its level is ever so slightly higher (just a tad) than true horizontal in relation to the carburetor body.

Note... It would have been better to continue on with the original post if possible as it's difficult to remember what the original problem was, what was said and done, etc. However, stick with this one now and I'll keep my eye on it.

" Well Joe I removed the anti-siphon valve and replaced it with a straight-thru fitting. I also pulled the plastic pick-up tube and found that the screen was blocked pretty bad with what looked like plastic shavings from the fuel tank. I cleaned the screen and put it back in.
I also noticed that the fuel bar had two hoses crimped badly. This I must have done when I reinstalled the carbs. This I think is scary as no fuel to those cylinders at low rpm's made for no oil either. It was definitely missing on those two. The two port side cylinders where cold when idling with the flushette where as the starboard side cylinders got very warm. Of course the engine was idling very rough and DIEING after about 10 seconds. I carefully straightened the hoses and started the engine. After that it sounded much stronger, (now running on all four), and it DIDN'T die! I didn't have time to put it in the lake but I'm quite optimistic here. The man I bought it from said it just needed some TLC and I think he knew what he was talking about.

I'll post here with follow up,

Thanks, thanks, thanks,

" Dr. Reeves....I'm cured!! Joe I took the carbs back off one more time and adjusted the floats per your instructions. This engine is running like brand new! It starts easier than ever. It does not die at idle in nuetral or in gear. It has a great hole shot and my original problem of dieing when opened up is gone!!! I can't wait 'til my wife gets home to tell her or better yet show her on the water.
The first time I was on this forum you told me how to check and fix my t/t. Now you've fixed my running problem.

Thanks for your excellent advice,

Mike "

"Mike... Always glad to hear a word of appreciation when a problem is solved. Now, what was that mailing address where I send the bill?<grin> Seriously, I hope the rest of your boating season is trouble free, but if not, stop back and see us.

" Hello All,

I have a 78 Merc 115 that has a pecular problem. It will start like a champ, run for 15 minutes, but then bog and lose idle. It is fouling plugs. Replacing the plugs seems to remedy the problem for another 15 minutes. Any thoughts on what I can do to keep her running?

Thank you in advance. "
