"I recently purchased a '9

"I recently purchased a '94 v4 115 and find it very hard to start...wanted to get an idea as to which direction to head first.

It took me over 30 minutes and multiple sprays of starting fluid to get the engine to fire, once it did I could start it after turning over for several seconds then got easier to start if having just run but let it sit for an hour or so and its hard to start again!"

"First thing - throw the start

"First thing - throw the starting fluid far away from the motor - it's a sure fire way to ensure a total rebuild in your future.

Ok, so new to you.

Fresh gas? (and make sure there's oil in her)
New sparkplugs?

Has the motor been sitting for a while? Carbs, particularly the low speed jets (idle jets) could be gummed up, but would try the gas/plugs first - common issue on a motor that may have been sitting.."

"Thanks for the info Graham...

"Thanks for the info Graham...to answer your questions: fresh gas w/oil=yes, new plugs=no

I did pull the plugs and they looked okay but do need to be replaced

the motor has been sitting a year or so but the PO said it was always hard to start the 10 years she had it but never had it looked at...

I plan a total rebuild of the carbs once I finish bolting it to my boat and getting new control cables installed (hopefully this weekend)"

"that is my next step, to rebu

"that is my next step, to rebuild the carbs...but you mention fuel pumps(s)

I need to look at the motor again and find the pump(s) mentioned."

Fuel pumps are on port side of

Fuel pumps are on port side of engine above your oil pump linkage a good way to see if they are bad crack the bolts loose and pump primer ball check to see if leaking around diaphrams you can rebuild your pumps just need to get the kit.

"Thanks Joshua! So if the pump

"Thanks Joshua! So if the pumps are good there should be NO leaking when the bolts are cracked open, correct!"

"Update! After pulling the car

"Update! After pulling the carbs & giving a good cleaning (no actual rebuild) and checking the fuel pump (good) I found the choke solenoid was not working...

It would engage maybe once out of a dozen times so I disconnected until I can find a replacement. I decided to replace the plugs and give it a shot while using the manual chode...viola! Fires up within seconds now!

Thanks for the replies...hope this helps someone down the road.

P.S.-anyone have a choke solenoid for sale, lol!"
