b94 Mariner 25 runs too rich

"I'm new to this site, need some advice and this looks like THE place. I've rebuilt the carb on my '94 Mariner 25 remote after I noticed fuel leaking from carb when tilted. I replaced all gaskets and diaphrams, cleaned carb and replaced on motor. Now, outboard running way too rich. Motor starts fine but smokes and blows oil. On the water motor runs as though it's way rich (sputters like not running on both cylinders and burning 2-3 times the fuel it used to) and will not get up to higher rpm's even at wot. I've taken the carb off two more times to check float/bowl and for any dirt/crud. Could the rebuilt fuel pump be pumping too much fuel? Could it be the wrong rebuild kit? I am at a loss. Any Ideas or help would be much appreciated."

"Sidney, sounds like you just have it adjusted a little too rich - at least that is the first place that I would start. Did you seat it and then back it out 1 1/2 turns upon reassembly?

I did reset the idle mixture s

I did reset the idle mixture screw to 1 1/2 turns and while running it on the lake even closed it on down more but still way too rich. I remixed my fuel with fresh 93 octane thinking I might have mixed a batch heavy on oil. The motor just will not lean out and run smooth or get up to proper rpm's. Thank you Graham thinking with me on this.

Your issues are not really indicative of a problem with the reeds, at least not the most common issues, but was wondering if you took a good look at them when you had the carb off.."

"put a timing light on each plug and check for spark, look down carb and check for fuel leaking when pumping fuel bulb. bypass fuel pump and pump bulb to see if it runs better. check compression. that should give you something to do
