"Joe,

I don't know which nuts you are talking about. Are you referring to the coupling that joins the lower and upper shift rods?

" thats them..but i have already taken it apart, and found that i have a leaky water pump seal...had to take off the pump, and the gaskets and those two rubber pieces under the gaskets "

" Joe,

When you reassemble

" Joe,

When you reassemble the shift rods, the only important thing is that the lower unit and the shift handle are both in neutral. The coupling threads onto both shift rods, so that as you turn it, the length of the shift rod assembly does not change. The locknut prevents the coupling from unscrewing. The position of the coupling and locknut is not important.

" umm..first things first..the shift rod has to be in neutral? the manual says for it to be in reverse.. and secondly, anyone kno of a yamaha dealer thats still open? all the ones around here are closing this weekend, so i wont have my parts untill after the 1st.. "

" Joe,

The important thing

" Joe,

The important thing is that the shift lever and the gearcase have to be in the same gear when you join the shift rods. It will be easier to fasten the coupling in one of the positions ( forward, neutral or reverse ); use whichever seems right.
