"Last time out engine was running bad under load about 1/2 the time. It wouldn't come up on plane, and it didn't have a lot of power to drive it up on the trailer.

I've been told a few months back I had a cylinder low, with some scoring. I checked the compression and had

95 95
92 90
80 80

Seems I've heard before that the bottom 2 cyclinders were designed with lower compression. Is that true?

Should I keep running it til failure, or go ahead and get it rebuilt? How much could I expect to pay for a rebuild at a boat dealership?"

"Your compression should be even across all cylinders (no greater than about 10% variance).

The longer you wait to rebuild the more likely the price is to escalate because you run the risk of more serious damage.

If you have any scoring you can expect to pay about 50 bucks a cylinder to have that cleaned up (honed or rebored). Then add the cost of rings/pistons as required on top of that (about 75 - 100 bucks a cylinder).

By the time you tack on the gaskets, possibly new bearings etc you could be looking at upwards of 1000 bucks for parts and close to that in labour.

2000-2500 would be about normal for a rebuild on a V6 motor, but compared to the cost of a new one, you end up with essentially a new powerhead for about 20% of the cost.

You may get differing opinions on how much to replace - some will tell you only to do the cylinders that are low. The way I look at it, you can go that way, but then next year if you lose another one or two you are back in the same position paying once again to have it all torn down - but the choice is yours..."
