"Hey guys, I have a '91 Evinrude Intruder 150 model # E150GLEIS. It starts on the first crank, but while idling right after start up it surges. It idles at 600rpm and surges to about 1200 then returns to 600. It seems like it may be doing it on the same cylinder. Once it warms up it runs fine. When it surges the exhaust spits out a bubble about the size of a softball. I pulled flywheel cover off and found a bad crack in one of the magnets and the stator coating had melted all over the power head. I replaced both and the first time I ran it the problem was gone. The second time I ran it the problem came back and has not gone away. The ignition coils, plug wires, and spark plugs are less than a year old and in good shape. I am by no means a mechanic, but I'm asking for a second opinion on whether or not I should replace the power pack, or if there is something else that could be causing this problem. Thanks, Justin"

"i would yank that flywheel off and look closely at the magnet situation..u may not have gotten them glued back on well,..repl the plugs, gap at .030.if u choose to service your eng your self,...get a factory service manual...
You may very well, have a quickstart prob,in pack. How and at what torque,..did u torque the flywheel???"

"u also may have a loose timin

"u also may have a loose timing wheel,...(update,requires a wave washer)..or loose sensor.since u have been in there,..a complete link & sync adjustment is due."

"Thanks, I did get a service m

"Thanks, I did get a service manual a few months back and did torque the flywheel according to its specs, although I can't remember what it was off hand. I actually bought a whole used flywheel and inspected it thouroughly before installing it, so I didn't have to glue any magnets. The timing wheel does have a wave washer and is in good shape. The timing sensor is also less than a year old and appears in good shape. I will check the plugs and do a link & sync on it and if that doesn't work I'm going to replace the pack. Thanks again for your help."
