"I recently purchase a '90

"I recently purchase a '90 Bayliner Capri with a 90 Hp Force. The seller said the engine ran good the last time in use a couple years ago. however
would be in need of a Tune up, the engine would turn over with no problems,but would not start up
and run, so he said probly bad wire connection at the Lanny I could not get any spark from any one of the plug wires,even though I had No compression tester with me I pulled the plugs and did the Ol-finger over the Hole test and it seem
OK at the time. I begain to talk to him more about a negotionable price as the boat is!
so anyway with these things known we begain to barter until we agree upon a price, I thought I had done well? just figured it needed a bit tinkering! got it home done a real compression test and found cyl. 1-120psi 2- 115psi 3-40psi
I figured a stuck ring! next put some lub in the cyl let set for a while tried turning it over and
re-checked compression. No change, pulled the
head and found a badly gouged cyl wall 0n #-3 >>
OK now for my Question? can these Cyl take .040
bore? if not can they be re-sleeved? I have read
that some of the Force engines cannot be re-sleeved.. anyone know this to be true fact?
and Last Question>> I still can't get this thing to show any spark ! I by-pass the lanny thatsnot the trouble, I pulled the fly wheel and sanded
any rust from the stat. so? what is thae cahnce of the CDI unti being bad, I've called this Guy up and pretty much Unloaded on him with him being every kind of lyer there are, but he still insist
that it ran with him a couple years ago, but it did skip some and he thought it was in need of a tune up. yeah right!

.03 over is the biggest they make oversize pistons
i have no idea about relseaving

"Yes I kinda thought that 030 was the max. but i had read somewere that had a .040 but couldn't be sure the Cylinder would take that much bore over.
and if I may ask another question? if for some
reason I could get by with the .030 bore, could I just bore the One cyl. with out boring the other 2
or would this cause the engine to be out of
balance?

"To expand on just-in-time's terseness, you can do just the one cylinder. You have 2 choices 15-over and 30-over. Go for Wiseco pistons. One 30-over piston will not throw the motor out of balance.

It you want to step it up a notch, you could go to forged pistons, they're a mite heavier and you'd be advised to do all 3.

However, before you start, you need to answer the question of why that cylinder is like that. I bought the same boat and motor combo 2 months ago.

The compression tests are almost identical to yours. #3 is at 30psi, with an exploded top ring that took a chunk out of the exhaust ports. I have no idea what did it -- the motor has so few hours that the factory cross-hatching is stil visible on the cylinder walls, there's no sign of pre-ignition and no evidence of a lubrication problem.

Yours make 3 motors i know of with the same problem. Can anyone out there shed light on this? Some sort of design weakness?

I do note that the pistons literally rattle in the bores when the engine is cold. My brother is suggesting that different expansion rates of the rings, pistons and bores might be at fault.

was it the piston skirt damages also?
do u have pics?
if the skirt was damaged usually is caused by to much piston to cylinder wall clearance
might be running lean also

if u choose whisco, they used to like .030"
but they changed alloys i think, might want to call them
reason why, the used to use a ton of silica in the metal, causing slow expansion and more than other piston manufactures"

"I've got the same combo, I ripped mine apart to see that there is a hole in the side in one of the pistons.
