"Ok, maybe I can get some good

"Ok, maybe I can get some good advise at where to start. I purchased a used '87 Larson with a 260 merc. in it. They said that the motor was rebuilt about a year ago and has only about 80hours on the rebuild. When I purchased the boat we ran it up and it sounded good. When I got home the the very next day I went to start it up. I started right up and I ran it for a little while. I turned it off and tried to start it back up. With not success it would not fire. It would turn over but just not start. I let it sit over night because I thought Imight have flooded it. The next day it started right up, but then just cut off after about 10 minutes. I tried to restart it up but it was doing the same thing. 2 days later it will turn over but just not start. I have been reading alot of comment on the site and herd all kinds of ideas and where to start. If any one has come across the same problem as I have it may save me some time and money. Thanks for any help I may receive."

Hate to ask a dumb qestion but

Hate to ask a dumb qestion but do you have fresh water going to the engine to cool it Also you might try calling to origianl owner see if theres a trick to it Make sure you have air fuel and spark a pluged fuel filter or fuel pump not pumping fast nuff to keep up mabye coil geting old bad wires cap rotor points (not sure it 87 had pionts) if your sure its not sparking check the basics and go from there

"Neil is right telling you to

"Neil is right telling you to start with the basics. How old is the fuel?

Look under the dist. cap for corroded wire posts, burned rotor, carbon tracking. Pull the rotor off and look at the optic sensor if it is Thunder Bolt Ign. If it is full of rust, it can become intermittent sending a signal to the amplifier module. Put in a new set of plugs. Coil may be dying; cheap to replace.

Make sure you have a strong fuel pulse from the throttle accellerator pump. Make sure the choke is not sticking shut and is operating properly. Clean the carb. linkages and throttle plates bushings w/carb spray. Then lightly lube all pivot points w/a light oil (20 wt. elec. motor oil). Clean the flame arrester."
