Has anyone ever tried to remove or bypass the heat exchanger and connect the lake water/sterndrive intake hose and connect it to the engine cooling system intake hose? Also connect the engine water return hose to the sterndrive return hose?

"No return hose. The water exits with the exhaust. I never really looked into this but I believe that all 470 models had closed cooling, there must be a reason. Having dissimilar metals in the engine may have something to do with the need for closed cooling and the use of coolant in the block.
Like I said I never researched the reason so this is just a guess, but closed cooling is an expense, I doubt Mercury would use closed cooling if there wasn't a reason. I'd make sure there wasn't going to be any side affects from removing the closed system and running fresh / salt water.

Anyone else know why the 470 has closed cooling?"

I agree w/Guest about dissimil

I agree w/Guest about dissimilar metals. Iron and aluminum have differnt rates of expansion. Uniform temperature control is important by using FWC. The engine coolant never gets as cold/warm as raw water which contributes to coolant temp. uniformity.

"I understand about saltwater

"I understand about saltwater and the aluminum block, but I have a tritoon that has never been within 100 miles of saltwater. Do you think this would work for those in freshwater only?"

Sure; let us know what happens to overall engine performance and when/why the engine quits running. It will be an interesting field test for all 170/470 owners.

im not too sure id try it larry? unless you just need to know and absolutely keep us posted .

"I have an 1985 Chaparral with the 3.7, 170hp motor. When I bought it, I was told that it was in the configuration mentioned above, and I confirmed it with the absence of coolant in the engine. I used it this way for about two months. I now have a 1989 3.7 as the original motor overheated and I ended up with alot of water in the oil.

If I knew then what I know now, I would not have bought that particular boat."
