"Hey guys, I am once again in need of your help. We have one of those 2 cylinder yamaha made mariner engines. On the boat it runs and idles ok with the hoe one it, shift it in gear and still runs great, once you put in at the ramp it idles ok, but dies when you put it in gear. I had to jump the idle up yesterday to go fishing, but I knoe high idle shifts will kill the lower unit. Anybody ever had this problem? I have adjusted the carbs 6 ways to sunday and no matter what I do I just can't get it in sinc."
 
You start your trouble shootin

You start your trouble shooting with a compression test. There is no amount of tuning that will fix a motor in bad shape.The motor is stalling because it is not making " power " and that is often caused by piston and ring problems.Outboards are hard working machines and are often run HOT/ POOR OIL/ WRONG PROP etc etc.Start with a compression test and post results.

"I have a tach, but I could not find a wire on the motor to use for it. I think I may have found the problem, when we shifted it into gear the timing rod would advance 10 degrees before the carbs even tried to open, I set it right now - I think."
