"Joe,
I have been reading thru posts on the marineengine.com forum. You are very helpful on this forum.

On my '84 Evin. 90hp, I am having battery drain from the engine. I am going to look for the red wire going to the starer silinoid that you posted for a 175 that is having the same problem. I do not think my engine is charging either. I have never comfirmed that for sure, but I just always charge my battery. Then in the last couple of months it drains my battery to zero (actually ruined a battery or two that I forgot to disconect). I only have the engine hooked up to my starting battery. If I go fishing, I have to unhook the battery or it will be dead before I leave. If there are any links on previous posts for this problem just put them up and I will read thru all of those."

"Battery drains are a problem

"Battery drains are a problem on older electrical. You may want to install a switch for your battery to turn off all power when not in use. They are cheap and can be purchased at almost any marine store. The easiest way to test if your battery is being charged by the engine is to put your voltmeter on the battery before you start the engine. While holding the leads on the battery have someone start the motor. The voltage should raise from 12-13 volts up to 13 or 14 volts. Possible sources for voltage leaks are old battery cables and connections. any corroded connection in the system. Any faulty component that dead shorts, such as lights instruments, cd players etc. Good Luck."

"There is nothing on the batte

"There is nothing on the battery except the engine itself. No accessories. When you put the second cable on it always makes a spark (at battery post). I don't know if that indicates a big amp draw or not?? But it will drain the battery VERY quickly.

I did replace the trim motor on it earlier this year and that works fine. The trim switch at the motor is disconected and does not work. Could there be any issues when I installed the new motor?

I bought a switch to put on the battery post but I really want to fix the problem, not patch it. Thanks for any help you guys can provide."

"Tim, if you are getting a spa

"Tim, if you are getting a spark when hooking up the cable, and there is not supposed to be any load on it (except when you hit the starter), then you definately have a short somewhere.

The spark indicates that power is flowing...."
