"I have a circa 1984 bf100. It's been sitting unused for awhile. It runs pretty good in neutral, but as sun as I put it in gear it runs rough, shakes and wont throttle up - It still turns the prop a bit though. Anybody have any ideas? This is my first outboard and I don't know to much about them so as much info as possible is much appreciated.... this poor dude has got to get his boat on the river."

"Those carbs had some of the smallest jets in the industry. You really had to spray them to get them clean. So my first guess would be the jets, followed by the screen in the fuel pump.

That said- it's real hard to tell the difference between fuel and ignition so here is a tip, When it's acting up put a small shot of fuel right in the carb. If it perks up, its the carb if it has little effect, it's the ignition. Follow up the ignition with a timing light. Tie down the trigger and watch for a change.

The good news is that engine is one of the best in it's class. I serviced 20 of them in a rental fleet and they were great. One of the few engines you could turn over to the general public (known for their care of rental equipment.) and have them come back in good condition."
