"I have a 1983 90 hp evinrude.

"I have a 1983 90 hp evinrude. It's my first boat and i put it in the water for the first time on Sat. When I first started going it only went about 10 mph at WOT (the old owner said it can go 35-40 mph). It seemed to rev up to 4,000 rpms and seemed like it popped out of gear. After I stopped and fished for a while I opened the throttle all the way and messed with the trim a little bit and got up to 37 mph @ 5500 rpm, I slowed down after about ten minutes and it died at idle I tried to start it but it wouldn't kick over just crank. I figured it was flooded so I waited about 15 min., it started up and went up to about 35 mph. It seemed to run good tell I went home. The next day I decided to take it out and I couldn't get it past 10 mph again and the rpms only went up to 4,000 max. I tried messing with the trim again but nothing helped(later I read in my Seloc manual that the trim automatically goes down past 1500 rpm). I don't know much about outboard motors ( this is my first boat) and my manual doesn't have much in diagnosis. If anyone knows what it could be please help."

"Compression should be approxi

"Compression should be approximately 100+ psi and even on all cylinders. Is it?

Spark with the plugs removed should jump a 7/16" gap on that engine. Does it?

If the two above areas check out okay, the carburetors are no doubt fouled from sitting. Remove, clean, and rebuild them using new complete carburetor kits. Be sure to clean the fixed high speed jets that are located in the bottom center of the float chamber.

See at the top of this page (Manuals). OBtain a service manual from Andrew so as to avoid expensive errors when working on that engine."

"I checked compression when i first got it about a month ago and it was about 115psi in each cylinder, and I have a Seloc service manual for it. How hard are the carbs to clean for someone who has never done one for a boat before? I did a quadrajet (car carbuerater) about 6 months ago are they similar?"

I meant are car carbeuraters s

I meant are car carbeuraters similar to marine carbeuraters not if quadrajets are similar to these.

"Comparing a quatrajet to the

"Comparing a quatrajet to the carb on an OMC 90 is like comparing a jet aircraft engine to a lawnmower engine. If you can tackle a quadrajet, you can do the 90 in your sleep. Outboard carbs tend to gunk or varnish-up in the bottom of the bowl. What may not be all that obvious is that on many of these carbs the jets are positioned down there, so they get easily blocked. I use Gumout and a piece of SS leader wire to clean the passages. You need to be careful not to damage the housing with the wire. Rebuild kits are cheap, and readily available."
