I have an '83 Evinrude 90

I have an '83 Evinrude 90 hp and before putting the boat on the water for the first time I changed the gearcase lube. The old lube looked fine just used and old (meaning not milky and didn't feel like there was any metal particles in it). I also made sure I got both screws in tight. I decided to check how it looked a few days later and it was milky which I guess means water is in it. After looking at the exploded diagram the only place I could see where it could be leaking would be the Prop shaft seals or the big O-ring behind the Bearing carrier (assuming nothing is cracked). Would I be correct in assuming that these could be the only places that could leak and could I change these without taking off the lower unit?

The most common place for a leak is not the prop-shaft seals unless You have run a fish line into it.
The seal under the waterpump (vertical shaft) is more likely.
If Water in the oil: Total reseal unless You know for certain where it comes from. And do not forget the shift-rod!

You need to look at exploded diagram again! there are more places where it can leak including the o-rings on the 4 screws on the propshaft bearing carrier. Now how did you fill the gearcase ( from bottom to top I hope )and did you let it sit for a couple of days??Air mixed in when checking immediately after running will fool you.

"yes i filled from bottom to top, I ran it last on Sun and I checked on Wednesday. I'm just trying to fix it before it causes more problems"

"A simple pressure test will take away all of the guess work. You can beg, or borrow a unit, or make your own. Ditto on what you were told. I have found the seals under the waterpump to be the usual suspects. As a matter of fact, OMC used to provide those years ago in the pump kit, I don't know why they stopped."
