"Great site, sound answers, it lets me think I can ask specifically...

I play at this stuff a bit, keeps the wife happy (she thinks I ran away). I am considering buying a 1988 Larson with a Mercruiser 170hp engine (block is winter frozen/cracked), & also a 1981? 170hp engine. If compatible, I am sorta ready to rebuild if/as required, but how/what do I check to sort out the compatibility question??

"The 170 & 470 are both great power plants when they are running. The boat sounds like it was neglected since the block is cracked; it has a fresh water cooling system filled with antifreeze.

Check the hull, floor, stringers and transom for rot before you by the boat. The 1981 and 1988 should be interchangeable. This website is full of threads about their problems and fixes. Converting to an standard alternator is common."

Both stated 170 hp, are both 470s? Will dig into this more at this end - next month, not rushed, it's a long winter up here."
