b79 Johnson 115 HP wonbt tilt down

"Engine was stored in the down

"Engine was stored in the down position for the winter. Engine tilted up fine, but was going to install transom saver and no tilt down. Will lower back down by using the manual release valve and is not binding. However, when I push the down button, I can hear the motor running. When it runs in the down position the motor doesn't sound "right". The motor sounds like the voltage is low but the battery was charged. Maybe something like the pump deadheading due to a stuck valve? When tilting up, the motor comes right up and the motor sounds like it should. Didn't get too much of a chance to check it out yesterday because it decided to rain. Just itchin' to get back on the lake. Thanks, Jonathan Taylor"

"After searching other similar posts on trim and tilt issues, I come across a thread about hydraulic lock. I don't remember who posted the solution, but it was a stuck valve on the port side. I removed one valve, the shuttle valve, and two springs. Inserted a punch in the valve and smacked right smart with a hammer. I then could hear pressure release. Filled unit with ATF, run through some cycles and topped off again. Now working normally. Thanks for such a good site. Jonathan Taylor"

"Thanks Jamie, the culprit was stuck (or hydraulically locked) trim check valve. I think, however, I'll go inside the junction block and check relays and connections just for giggles. Maybe coat connections with dielectric grease. Got some other things to take care of before getting to the lake such as, seat frames and fuel gage. Just have to wait for the global warming to take effect 'cause the temps here dipped back into the teens again. Oh well, just more time for marineengine.com. I love this site! Jonathan Taylor"
