when i was running it on the m

when i was running it on the muffs noticed that the water from the main holes in back were barely trickling water unless i bumped up the fast idle then it would just squirt for a second or 2 and trickle again(with idle still bumped up) does this mean wp getting weak or is this normal? thanks for the help.

"As long as water is shooting

"As long as water is shooting out strong from the water outlet telltale, and you can lay your hand on the cyl heads and exhaust baffle plate for a few seconds, the water exiting out the exhaust relief holes is of no concern. See the following.

(Exhaust Relief Ports - Exhaust Housing (Inner/Outer)
(J Reeves)

The long housing between the powerhead and the lower unit is called the exhaust housing. There is a inner housing within it that has a heavy duty seal around the bottom of it, or heavy duty seals around a inner extension between the housing and the lower unit.

The red hot exhaust travels down thru that inner tube and out the propeller with a somewhat supply of water to cool the propeller hub. A good amount of water surrounds and fills the space between the outer and inner tube, otherwise the outer housing would get so hot that the paint would burn off.

Some water pumps, for some reason (differing even when new) exert a great amount of water pressure, and if the exhaust housing seals are in perfect condition, the water fills the tube to a point of overflowing.

This brings into play those two holes or slots, whichever the engine might have, at the top rear portion of the exhaust housing just below the powerhead.

Now, if those two holes/slots weren't there, water would continue to flow up into the cylinders. Water not flowing out of those holes is no concern for alarm UNLESS that outer housing suddenly becomes extremely hot..... the warning horn should sound long before that happens.

The main reason for those holes being there (exhaust relief holes) is that when at an idle, there is an extreme amount of resistance encountered by the exhaust trying to escape due the fact that the outlet via the propeller is now blocked by a wall of water. The escape route in this case is for the exhaust to escape out those two holes, otherwise the engine would slow down quite quickly and die. If exhaust cannot escape, air/fuel cannot gain entrance to the engine.

"I have a Johnson Evinrude 115

"I have a Johnson Evinrude 115 2 stroke, the exhaust relief ports, Not quite sure where to find them, when I have the engine running out of the water, there is no water shooting out thru any visible ports. The only port holes that are visisible are at the bottom section of the lower unit. I did get the boat into the water and it started, but then it died down and then it would not even turn. Suggestions as to where the exhaust ports are at and why it did not want to start. I also would like a diagram to show me where the ports are at. Thanks"

"lupe:
i would start a new forum like they said above- but you should not run your motor out of water unless your lower unit is in a tank of water of somekind or you can buy a flusher that covers those holes at the lower section of the lower unit. you probably need new water pump, i know from experiance it doesnt take long without water to ruin a wp.

like joe said above you should have water coming out of your telltale usually on starboard(right) side of motor cover."

when looking up wp parts there

when looking up wp parts there is a "chrome pump kit" and a "water pump repair kit" is this a more complete kit or maybe a longer life kit?
