"I got into the lower unit this morning and had some success. At least I finally got the retaining ring out. The shift rod, however, might as well have been welded into the yoke. I've tried vice grips, and it will not turn. I've dribbled some Kroil down the rod in hopes of loosening it. I'll give that an hour or so before trying bigger vice grips.

On another point, I've noticed the manual says I should coat the edges of new oil seals with gasket sealing compound. I don't have any OMC gasket compound, but I do have some automotive type. It's a tacky liquid that can be brushed on. Is this still the preferred way of installing seals? Is there any danger of the compound getting into the adjacent bearings?

Thanks."

That tacky liquid that comes in a can with a small brush attached to its screw off cap is identical to the OMC Gasket Sealing Compound.

The shift rod/yoke problem.... strange! I've never encountered that. You are turning it out in the proper direction I assume? It has a normal right hand thread.

"The Kroil worked. Well, that and TWO vise grips on opposite sides like a T-handle. Came right out.

The old seals, however, are being stubborn. The puller apparently can't get a good grip on the metal part of the seals and is slipping out through the rubber. More Kroil! I'll let it sit overnight and see if that helps.

Thanks, Joe!"

"See attached photos of forward gear and shift dog. Do they appear to be salvagable by machining? The shift dog apparently has already been reversed on the shaft, because the groove was toward the forward gear instead of the prop as the book says it should be. That indicates to me that the lobes on the forward gear have already had twice the beating of the lobes on the dog. One of the gear lobes is pretty badly rounded.
