I have a 73 40 horse Johnson.

I have a 73 40 horse Johnson. Mod#40E730. The drive shaft is stuck in the bottom of the crankshaft. I have removed the power head and have the whole thing hanging upside down by the shaft. i keep adding WD-40 and heat but the shaft wont drop out. I have a 74 40 horse that the shaft slides in and out at will no probs. just keep what im doing or what? the motor runs great but it needed a water impeller and thats when i found the stuck shaft.

"Another trick you could try is a freezer spray on the shaft.

But i reckon it'll be more of the same until it comes out. Heat is usually the amswer with things that are stuck,

Can you tap the end of the crankshaft using a brass drift to protect it from damage while holding the shaft. Gentle taps with a good sized hammer rather that whacking away with a little one."

i have tapped fairly hard on the end of the shaft with a dead blow hammer that has a brass cap. i only have a pencil torch so i'm not generating much heat. but everytime i heat it junk bubbles out.

Keep up with what your are doi

Keep up with what your are doing. It will come out but it will take a while. Be patient!!

PB Blaster penetrating oil may work better than WD 40.

"Shaft is out!!!!!! whooo hooo

"Shaft is out!!!!!! whooo hoooooo.. heat and taps and wd 40 and heat and taps and ...well you get the idea...So. If you have a driveshaft that is stuck in the crank... pull the powerhead, hang it by the shaft (wrap a leather belt round and round so you dont damage the shaft.) spray it, let it sit, heat it, tap it ..do it again every few hours, in a couple of days it will drop."
