" I purchased this engine used

" I purchased this engine used and have no history. Runs well and stays cool (between 60 and 100) on dash gage. Tested gage. I get no water out the pee hole yet engine runs cool, ran around the lake for half an hour. In drive-way with mouse-ears on and full water pressure, still no water at hole with or without engine running. Should the mouse-ears be able to force water out the hole with engine not running? Is what I have an indication of a plugged hole? Or what is the proper method to test circulation? "

" Kent;1971/50hp Evinrudes never had an overboard indicator/telltale/pee hole.Your engine should idle at 143*+-.Make sure your overtemp alarm works. What pee hole are you talking about, where is it?Are you sure of the year? What is the model number?Usually blowing out the "pee hole" with compressed air is all it takes. " Hi,

Thanks for answering.

" Hi,

Thanks for answering. I was given bad info by someone else, hence the thinking I had a bad "pee hole". The hole I was looking at is evidently nothing. I tested the gage with a temp sensor and the gage is very accurate, so the engine is not getting as warm as you say it should. The temp pickup is on an aluminum tab off of a bolt on the head. It runs at about 80 degrees, although the water is pretty cold this time of year. Do I need to try to get it to run warmer? Is there a thermostat I should be checking and if so where is it located? Or should I just leave it alone before I screw it up?

I tested the overtemp alarm and it works too.

Thanks again for your help.

Kent "
