b66 Evinrude 100hp parts

" I have a '66 Evinrude 100hp engine that has not been used for 20 years. It starts easily and compression is Ok at about 100psi. I would welcome an opinion on whether or not this engine can be used reliably. I know it probably needs items like a water pump, fuel pump kit, tune-up kit, ignition wires and distributor cap, thermostat, timing belt and a carb kit. Are these parts still available? The lower unit shifted fine and the lube looked good. The switch for the electric shift that attaches to the throttle control is shot. Is that switch still available? Are there any other items that may need service that I haven't thought about. Thanks.

"Dan.... Whether or not the engine is reliable depends on its condition. It is a good design if that's what you're asking. I'll check what I have in stock pertaining to the parts you mentioned and get back to you. The shift switch you mentioned.... is that a toggle type switch (Johnson c/box) or a push button switch (Evinrude c/box)?

right now I'm using a 196

right now I'm using a 1961 evinrude 75 hp v-4 starflite and it runs better than my brothers 5 yr old Nissan 40 hp outboard. and other than a faulty distributor cap and a new primer bulb I have not had to do a lot to this motor. and I am very happy with it.

" Dan, If the motor starts and runs well, The money spent for all those parts and labor may be better saved. A distributor cap can be cleaned, and washed to remove external dust and dirt. If it is pumping the impeller sounds like it is working. If the motor was put away with dry carbs, ie : run the motor out of fuel, No need to disturb the carbs with a "Kit". If the spark wires look deteriorated OK change them. I guess it depends on how far out in the ocean you go. I would make short cruises and trips at first having a small auxilliary motor along in case. To build confidence with the motor. Also running it will be good for it as well. Just an opinion. " Thanks to everyone for their input. I would say this motor is in overall good condition with about 15 years of light to moderate use on it. It was always well maintained. The boat is not in the water so I only idled it for a short while and I'm not sure it was pumping much water.
Joe... The shift switch is a 3 position push/pull
type that mounted to the bottom of the Morse control. Thanks for looking for parts availability.
Madmike.. It's good to hear some of these old engines are still running strong.
Adekalb... I agree that I may not need all the items I listed but I would feel better knowing they were available if needed. I could probably start off with just a water pump, thermostat, tune-up kit and fuel pump kit. I need to decide if my money would be better spent repairing this motor or putting it towards a newer used one. If I do go with this '66 maybe I can buy a used kicker for "peace of mind" especially when I'm out with my kids. Thanks again to all.
