"I bought a '01 9.9LS kicker that has been stored 5yr.s. It had 1/2 tank of break in mix run through it before I got it. I ran it this passed weekend and

I see some tan water/oil mix goo leaking from the seals on the prop shaft. Is it most likely that the prop shaft seal is dried out from storage? or do both drive and prop shaft seals need R&R? I took the prop off, can't easily see how to proceed from there, looks like I need a special spanner wrench? Any advice is appreciated, thanks."

"John, I would first ask are you sure it's the seals that are leaking and you are not just getting gunk (from running the motor) coming down the exhaust housing and exiting the the thru-hub exhaust.

Each spring when I bring a few outboards "back into service" from sitting all winter, I fire them up and run some PowerTune through them. What exits the prop (and sometimes the exhaust holes as well) is a goop that resembles (chocolate milkshake).

After a couple of good runs, it always clears up.

I would definately put in a waterpump kit (impeller/seals etc) but I may just hold off on tearing down the lower end.

A pressure test may save you alot of work for nothing..."

"Thanks for the advice, I drained the lower- there seemed to be water in it based on how quickly it drained. However, there wasn't any milkiness or brown color at all in the drain hole that I had expected to see. I had a good 1/2 cup of "chocolate shake" come out the prop, and after I removed the prop, a tablespoon oozed out the shaft/seal joint. Later then I drained the lower. I guess I'd save myself some work if I double check it by refilling with fresh and running it again. This I will do. This is the first outboard I bought "new"/next-to-new. Thanks.

John"

"PowerTune is an (cleaner) to get crap/carbon out of the power head. Sprayed in through the carb with the motor running.

I don't really buy off on the "tune up in a can" notion, but it does a nice job of removing fogging oil that I spray in the powerheads for winter storage...."
