"I have a Johnson '87 70hp
"I have a Johnson '87 70hp - inside the throttle body, there is a round black plastic device that has two purple and one brown wire going to it. It is part of the automatic choke electronics.
When the red lever on the automatic choke solenoid is turned off, the engine runs, but not well. When the lever is turned to the correct position, the engine revs to it's highest until all gas is gone and then stops, unless you push the key for the automatic choke and then it just stays running long enough for THAT gas, or you push the key again, etc. With the automatic choke off, you must have the throttle raised up or the engine will stall, but it runs rough. Then when you turn the automatic choke (red lever) on, sometimes the engine would rev at max RPMs until the gas was spent, weather you lowered the throttle or not.
So I keep tinkering.
While doing this, I noticed the smell of burning wires and smoke coming out of the throttle body. When I opened the throttle body I found the protective plastic cover over the wires to this round black device had melted, as had some of the outer casing of the device. It is held in by one screw and sits right above the key hole (inside).
What is this device? I suspect it is causing the Automatic Choke solenoid not to work properly. In any even, it is fried now and will need to be replaced, what ever it is called. Any guesses?
By the way, previous to this issue, I had replaced a small fuel line from the Automatic Choke solenoid to the T-coupling that feeds the carburetors. It had split along the seam where it attaches to the coupling. Ran the battery down a few times until the fuel line leak was discovered.
Many thanks - Jeff"
